Using PLM to drive efficiencies in After Market Support including Interactive 3D Parts Catalogs The continuous pressure that manufacturing companies face to innovate and reduce time to market is being hampered by out of date processes in the Service Lifecycle domain. Companies have invested heavily in Product Life-cycle Management (PLM), but progress now needs to be made to re-engineer and drive process improvement across the Service Lifecycle domain.

The emerging consensus across industrial sectors shows that class-leading companies are adopting integrated approaches towards service lifecycle management and product lifecycle management, bringing together and leveraging product data and product-data attributes with aftermarket deliverables and service lifecycle processes.

Many of the challenges arise from the standalone and ad-hoc nature of many of the Service Lifecycle processes including content generation (text, 2D), configuration control and management of that content. This data disconnect creates challenges for the cost-effective and timely production of after-sales deliverables resulting in:

  • Diverging Documentation: delays in maintaining up to date information.
  • Launch Delays: no concurrent development of product and documentation.
  • No Reuse: no reuse of content from technical publications to training.
  • Compliance headaches: delay in compliance with industry or government standards.

In order to change the process it is critical to understand that Service Lifecycle information (parts catalog, manuals, training etc) is really an alternate view of the bill of materials (linked to the actual product) with additional text, graphical (2D, 3D) and other related data. This is how best practice implementations treat the Service Lifecycle information as an extension to the product bill of materials within the associated change workflow.

Service Lifecycle information has its own structure and requirements so it is not just a matter of imposing engineering disciplines and data management rules in Service Lifecycle but adapting these to provide a more holistic approach to true lifecycle management. The data should be managed within the PLM and linked to the existing engineering change management.

The efficiency and value is driven from:

  • Reduction in man-hours: Reduction in time to source, edit and create the necessary information. Automated or semi-automated update processes that are workflow driven from the engineering change management system.
  • Reduction in elapsed time or time to market: Reduced cycles of information plus enabling the author to work via a single authoring interface means reduction in completion time.
  • Reuse: Continuous reuse of content across multiple disciplines:- Spares, Manuals, Training.
  • Start Earlier: As the new process relies on direct access to the CAD and design data it means that the Service Lifecycle authoring process can begin earlier. As changes and updates are easy to make there is no reason to delay.
  • Quality Improvements: Data is now linked to engineering change thereby triggering updates in Service information.

Connell has over 15 years' experience in implementing next generation authoring and publishing solutions for work instructions and technical documentation. He has worked across multiple industries including; Aerospace & Defence, Automotive, Industrial Machinery and Oil & Gas.

Connell has been very active in the development and promotion of open standards for 3D for publishing and is a regular speaker at industry conferences including ATA and S1000D.

Prior to founding Cortona3D, Connell ran a number of successful venture capital funds. He was also a founding partner of Meridian Capital, a boutique corporate finance company focused on Eastern Europe.

SIEMENS INTRODUCES NEW ISSUE AND QUALITY MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE

Nuremberg, 04 February 2013--Helps Manufacturers Increase Quality, Reduce Cost Siemens introduced a new quality management solution for issue management and CAPA (Corrective and Preventive Action). The new Teamcenter solution, an offering of Siemens™ PLM software business unit, provides greater visibility into quality management processes and faster time-to-closure of quality issues. It also offers a more complete and consistent process for root-cause identification, correction, prevention and verification, which directly impacts the risk of recurrence and enables continuous quality improvement.

According to an Aberdeen Group report*, product lifecycle management (PLM) and quality management interoperability can help reduce internal and external failure costs by more than 50 percent and reduce the total cost of quality by eight percent.

CAPA processes are a critical component of quality management solutions. The issue management and CAPA solution is a web-based offering that is part of Siemens™ Teamcenter® portfolio, the world's most widely used digital lifecycle management software. The new solution integrates quality and change management processes, enhances decision-making and supports Eight Disciplines Problem Solving (8D), a method used to approach and resolve problems, typically employed by quality engineers.

Formal CAPA activities which focus on the systematic investigation of discrepancies (customer complaints, defects, failures, etc.) in an attempt to permanently solve root causes and prevent recurrence are a widely used process for ensuring the quality and safety of products. When issues arise, time-to-closure is critical. Until the issue's root-cause is identified, corrected, validated and closed, manufacturers must spend time and effort on workarounds, repairs and rework. Even when issues are detected internally, they have a significant impact on manufacturing productivity. This situation worsens when issues are detected post-production by customers or regulatory bodies, potentially creating a liability and impacting customer satisfaction.
